This morning on the Jeremy Vine Show the panel were discussing the governments plans to crack down on the penalties for drink driving, especially over the Christmas break.

According to Gov 2018, the current penalties are:

'Being in charge of a vehicle while above the legal limit or unfit through drink'
May get you:
  • 3 months’ imprisonment
  • up to £2,500 fine
  • a possible driving ban

'Driving or attempting to drive while above the legal limit or unfit through drink'
May get you:

  • 6 months’ imprisonment
  • an unlimited fine
  • a driving ban for at least 1 year (3 years if convicted twice in 10 years)

'Refusing to provide a specimen of breath, blood or urine for analysis'

May get you:

  • 6 months’ imprisonment
  • an unlimited fine
  • a ban from driving for at least 1 year

'Causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink'

May get you:

  • 14 years’ imprisonment
  • an unlimited fine
  • a ban from driving for at least 2 years
  • an extended driving test before your license is returned.

With this in mind, penalties are set to dramatically increase with the potential of going to prison for 1 year if caught driving and above the legal limit. With Christmas just around the corner, it is important to remember that you should drink responsibly and we recommend that if you are going out this holiday and planning to drink than make sure to arrange suitable transport to your destination i.e. a taxi or a designated driver. The risks far out way the benefits, and in a time where many people rely on their cars to make a living, make sure you are #drinkaware this Christmas!

Merry Christmas,
